Personal Profile

Xiuyang Xia is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He received his PhD in Physics from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2023, and subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany. In 2026, he joined SUSTech as a full-time faculty member, with appointments in both the Department of Physics and the Center for Complex Flows and Soft Matter. His research focuses on theoretical soft matter and biophysics, with contributions to entropy-driven self-assembly of colloids, multivalent superselectivity, and polymer network theory. His representative works include the entropy-driven phase transitions in DNA-coated colloids and the formation mechanism of chiral colloidal Kagome lattices. As first or corresponding author, he has published in Science (1), Reports on Progress in Physics (1), Science Advances (2), PNAS (1), and Physical Review Letters (2). He also serves as a reviewer for journals including Physical Review Letters and Physical Review Research.

The Computational Soft and Living Matter (CSLM) group studies the microscopic structures and dynamical behaviors of soft and living matter from the perspectives of statistical physics and computational modeling. The group fosters a research environment driven by curiosity, open sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students with interests in statistical mechanics, numerical simulation, or the physics of living matter are welcome to get in touch.

The group is currently recruiting Master’s and PhD students for the 2027 intake, and also has ongoing openings for research assistant professors, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants. Research directions include, but are not limited to, the theory of self-assembly dynamics, mechanisms and functions of nonequilibrium phase separation, and the statistical physics of neural networks. New members are encouraged to develop independent research directions based on existing work. Applicants should send a CV and a research statement (including past projects and future plans) to xiaxy@sustech.edu.cn.
