2024-05-31Earlier this week, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Li Jiaming came to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He was the guest of honor, giving the 227th lecture in the SUSTech lecture series on the topic, “Fun with Computational Physics.” SUSTech Professor of Physics Ke XIA presided over the lecture.
CAS Academician Li Jiaming is a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences and a professor of physics at Tsinghua University where he is a director of the Center for Atomic, Molecular and NanoSciences at Tsinghua University’s Department of Physics. He is also a member of the National Science and Technology Awards Evaluation Committee, and a member of the Physical Science Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
Professor Li Jiaming is an expert in atomic and molecular theory and has long been engaged in research in atomic and molecular physics.
Professor Li Jiaming first talked about the significant developments China has made in computer science and associated fields. He pointed out that the trend is pointing towards intelligent robots and the integration of human-robot interfaces, which shows that computational science needs computational physics. This promising development is vital for many nationally strategic projects, including a nation’s defense and security.
He said that he had always enjoyed computational physics, and encouraged students to find their own fun in their respective fields. Professor Li Jiaming took the influence of Chinese and Western traditional culture on scientific research and the process of discovering dark matter and dark energy as examples. Encourage everyone to dare to imagine and not be confined.
Professor Li Jiaming stressed the importance of a solid foundation to support their future careers. This approach helped him develop a better understanding of his research, and ensured that he would continue to enjoy the field.
Students and teachers asked many questions of Professor Li Jiaming at the end of the lecture, which he answered with patience and joy.
